Most sites have the content they need. What they don’t have is a map. Pages sit three or four clicks from the homepage with nothing pointing at them, definitions get rewritten from scratch in twelve different posts, and the one page that should be the definitive answer on a topic is linked to exactly once, from a footer, with the anchor text learn more. Then everyone wonders why neither Google nor ChatGPT seems to know what the site is actually about.
Internal linking is the most controllable signal in search, and it’s become more important, not less, now that answers are being assembled by machines. External links you earn over years. Internal links you decide this afternoon. The Cory Maki SEO approach treats them as the connective tissue between two audiences that increasingly want the same thing: a reader trying to understand a topic, and a retrieval system trying to decide which chunk of text to quote.
Why internal links matter more in the AI era
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — optimizing so that AI systems like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity cite your content in their answers — has changed what “winning” looks like. A blue link at position three is not the prize anymore. Being the source an AI engine reaches for is.
Here’s the part people miss. AI answers aren’t usually built from whole pages. They’re built from passages. A system retrieves the chunks that best match a question, then synthesizes. That means your site is being evaluated at the paragraph and section level, and the surrounding context — what links in, what links out, what the anchor text calls it — helps establish what that passage is about and whether it belongs to a body of work or is floating alone.
Over a decade in reputation and search, the pattern has been consistent: sites that link deliberately get crawled more thoroughly, get their best pages surfaced more often, and get quoted more accurately. Sites that link lazily get their weakest page cited for their most important topic. That second outcome is worse than not being cited at all, because the AI answer becomes the impression a prospect forms of you.
The mechanism: what a link actually communicates
Strip away the folklore and an internal link does four concrete things.
- It creates a discovery path. Crawlers follow links. A page with no inbound internal links is an orphan, and orphans get crawled late, shallowly, or not at all.
- It distributes authority. Pages that many of your own pages point to read as more central. This is how you tell a search engine which page is the canonical answer versus which one is a supporting note.
- It labels the destination. Anchor text is a human-written, one-line summary of what’s on the other side. For a language model, that’s a free, high-quality signal about what a page contains.
- It proves topical coverage. A dense, sensible web of links across twenty related pages is evidence of depth. This is why internal linking and topical authority built on depth rather than volume are really the same project viewed from two angles.
A concrete example. Say a SaaS company publishes on AI search visibility. They have one pillar page defining Generative Engine Optimization and about thirty supporting posts — Reddit strategy, schema, AI Overviews, citation tracking, prompt-level keyword research. In the bad version, each post defines GEO again in its own words, links to nothing, and ranks for nothing in particular. Thirty pages compete with each other and none of them is clearly the answer.
In the good version, the pillar page owns the definition. Every supporting post links to it once, in the first or second paragraph, with descriptive anchor text — how generative engine optimization works, the definition of GEO, AI search visibility fundamentals. The pillar links back out to the five or six deepest supporting posts. Related spokes link sideways to each other where a reader would genuinely want the next piece. Now there’s a shape. The pillar page is unmistakably the center of gravity, the spokes each own a narrow question, and a retrieval system pulling a passage from any one of them sits inside a context that reinforces rather than confuses.
Structure for humans and machines at the same time
The way I think about this: if a link would help a real reader who is genuinely confused at that exact sentence, it helps a machine too. If it wouldn’t, it’s noise — and noise dilutes the links that matter.
That principle rules out most of what passes for internal linking. Sidebar “related posts” widgets that fire automatically. Footer link blocks. Three links stacked in a single sentence. Repeating the same anchor text on the same page four times. None of that reads as editorial judgment, and editorial judgment is exactly what you’re trying to demonstrate.
What does work is boring and specific: two to five contextual links per page, placed inside the paragraph where the idea comes up, with anchor text that describes the destination rather than the action. This is also one of the SEO fundamentals that still matter regardless of what any given algorithm update does, because it’s downstream of something that doesn’t change — clear organization of information.
What to do this week
In my work with clients, the internal linking cleanup usually follows the same sequence. It’s unglamorous and it compounds.
- Inventory and find the orphans. Crawl the site. List every URL with zero inbound internal links. Those pages are invisible to crawlers arriving through your own structure. Fix them first — it’s the fastest win available.
- Pick your pillars. For each core topic, choose one page that owns the definitive answer. One. If two pages are competing, merge them or clearly subordinate one.
- Route the spokes. Every supporting page links to its pillar early in the body, with varied, descriptive anchor text. Every pillar links out to its strongest spokes.
- Rewrite the anchors. Replace here, this post, and read more with the actual subject of the destination page. Anchor text is free labeling. Most sites throw it away.
- Reduce click depth. Anything that matters should be reachable within three clicks of the homepage. If your best page is buried under a date-based archive, it’s buried.
- Make sections self-contained. Write each H2 section so it makes sense quoted alone. AI engines extract passages, not pages — a paragraph that opens with “as mentioned above” is unquotable.
- Build the update loop. When a new post publishes, add links to it from the three most relevant existing posts. Put this in your publishing checklist so it happens every time. Systems and automation are how quality scales past the point where anyone remembers to do it manually.
One thing that consistently works: treating your glossary and definition pages as link magnets. Every time a term like GEO, AI Overviews or the ARC Method for earning AI citations appears for the first time on a page, link it to the page that defines it. That single habit builds a coherent internal knowledge graph without anyone having to plan one.
What to measure, and what not to promise
Internal linking is not a lever you pull for a ranking on Tuesday. What I’m seeing across AI search is that structural work shows up as a change in which of your pages gets surfaced and cited, often before it shows up as movement in traditional rankings. Watch crawl stats and indexation. Watch which URLs appear in AI Overviews and which get cited in ChatGPT and Perplexity answers for your core questions. Watch whether the right page is the one being quoted.
Nobody can guarantee an AI citation, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. What you can control is whether the machine reading your site can tell what you’re an authority on. That’s the same question a serious prospect is asking, which is why structure sits at the overlap of search, AI reputation management and Generative Engine Optimization rather than in a technical SEO silo.
The durable principle
Search engines and language models are both trying to answer the same question about your site: what is this place actually the authority on, and which page proves it? Internal links are how you answer that in your own words, at scale, without waiting on anyone else to link to you.
Rankings shift. Retrieval systems change how they chunk and weight content. Clarity and structure survive all of it, because a well-organized site is easier to read, easier to crawl, and easier to quote — and those three things have never once pointed in different directions.
